Short-handed Bolts rally to thwart Fuel Masters

Chris Newsome and Reynel Hugnatan also finished in twin digits with a combined 33.Phoenix paraded a new import in Brandon Brown and almost hammered out a victory. But the Fuel Masters, who broke in Jeff Chan after acquiring the left-handed gunslinger from Rain or Shine just over a week ago, couldn’t hold on to a 77-62 lead late in the third quarter and went down for the fourth straight game after a 2-0 start.Brown, playing in lieu of the injured Eugene Phelps, finished with 38 points, while Chan wound up with 27 in his biggest offensive game of the season.ADVERTISEMENT MOST READ UPLB exempted from SEA Games class suspension WATCH: Streetboys show off slick dance moves in Vhong Navarro’s wedding SEA Game: Active PH Volcanoes ready to erupt Trending Articles PLAY LIST 00:50Trending Articles00:59Sports venues to be ready in time for SEA Games01:27Filipino athletes get grand send-off ahead of SEA Games01:37Protesters burn down Iran consulate in Najaf01:47Panelo casts doubts on Robredo’s drug war ‘discoveries’01:29Police teams find crossbows, bows in HK university01:35Panelo suggests discounted SEA Games tickets for students02:49Robredo: True leaders perform well despite having ‘uninspiring’ boss02:42PH underwater hockey team aims to make waves in SEA Games Catriona Gray spends Thanksgiving by preparing meals for people with illnesses Brown, though, missed the potential game-tying basket as time expired. (AP Photo/Julio Cortez)NEW YORK — Who would have guessed at the start of 2017 that Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer would divvy up the year’s four Grand Slam titles? And who could possibly pretend to know what 2018 will bring for them?ADVERTISEMENT Ethel Booba on hotel’s clarification that ‘kikiam’ is ‘chicken sausage’: ‘Kung di pa pansinin, baka isipin nila ok lang’ Nadal’s drought without so much as one appearance in a major semifinal had stretched to about 2½ years.By the end of the Australian Open, though, they were squaring off to decide the title. It was the pair’s ninth Grand Slam final against each other — it’s happened at least twice at each major except the U.S. Open, where they have never met — but first since the 2011 French Open.At the time, Nadal said Sunday, “I was surprised.”But he wasn’t taken aback by what he and Federer were able to do later in the year. It was clear — to Nadal, to everyone — that they were once again capable of being the dominant figures in their sport.“To come back and win all four Grand Slams was quite an achievement, regardless of how good they are. There is a lot of very tough competition,” said Kevin Anderson, the first-time major finalist who failed to put up too much of a fight in a 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 loss to the No. 1-ranked Nadal.“When they’re healthy, I think they have so many skills they can rely on. In addition to that is just the amount of experience they have had,” Anderson said. “Playing at this level, I think they feel very comfortable, and obviously they might get nervous, but just like anything, the more you do it, the more used to it you get.”It didn’t hurt that the three men who are next in the pecking order all had down years and injury issues: Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray and Stan Wawrinka. All missed the U.S. Open. All could return to contention for big prizes next year.Add in that trio’s major totals (Djokovic has 12, Murray and Wawrinka three apiece), and since the start of the 2005 French Open, the top five men have won 49 of the past 51 Grand Slam championships.Still, after all this time, there are still two who stand alone at the top: Rafa and Roger. Sammy replaces Gayle as West Indies captain

first_imgChris Gayle was on Monday dumped from West Indies captaincy and replaced by all-rounder Darren Sammy in a shake-up aimed at rebuilding the side which has been on decline for some years. The West Indies Cricket Board announced the decision to sack Gayle, who has been skipper since 2007, while naming the squad for the three-match Test tour of Sri Lanka next month.Sammy, though, has not been a regular member of the Test side having played just eight matches after making his debut in June 2007.Gayle, who recently refused new central contracts with the WICB last month along with Dwayne Bravo and Kieron Pollard, is still in the squad as a batsman.Gayle, Bravo and Pollard had refused central contracts which stipulated that they must make themselves available for the West Indies team at all times.Bravo was also demoted from vice-captaincy with Brendan Nash taking over the job for the Test series in Sri Lanka, though he is still in the squad. The sacking of Gayle, who led West Indies to three wins in 20 Tests as captain, and naming of Sammy and Nash into positions of responsibility was apparently done as WICB wanted stability in leadership from players whose availability was not in question.WICB chief executive Ernest Hilaire thanked Gayle for leading West Indies “during a challenging period” of the game in the country.”Chris Gayle, the former captain, led the West Indies during a challenging period and the board thanks him for stepping up then but it is now time to pass the mantle on as the West Indies rebuilds,” said Hilaire.advertisementWest Indies are seventh in the Test rankings and eighth in the world in the one-day format and the WICB is hoping 26-year-old Sammy can inspire an improvement.”We are at the dawn of a new era in West Indies cricket and the selection committee has entrusted the challenging job of captaincy to Darren Sammy because it is believed that he has demonstrated the attributes of a leader of this diverse group of men,” said selection committee chairman Clyde Butts.Sammy is excited at being handed the captaincy and said he was looking forward to the challenge despite several experienced men, including the now uncontracted Denesh Ramdin, Ramnaresh Sarwan and Jerome Taylor, are missing from Sri Lanka-bound Test squad. Veteran batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul though is in the squad.”Being appointed West Indies captain is an honour which I will treat with the highest regard and dignity. I believe my captaincy of the Windward Islands will stand me in good stead as West Indies captain as we work on building a team for the future,” Sammy said.”I have always given my all when I prepare and play for the West Indies and nothing will change now. I know this will be a difficult challenge and I will take the torch from Chris and hold it high as we forge ahead. I expect to have the full support of the squad.”- With PTI inputslast_img read more
