Dismay after government approves repressive media bill

first_img June 15, 2020 Find out more Coronavirus “information heroes” – journalism that saves lives News Organisation Read in Arabic (بالعربية)Reporters Without Borders is very worried by the Jordanian government’s approval of a bill last week that would radically change the existing media legislation and drastically restrict freedom of information. Parliament is due to begin considering the bill on 2 September.”We are disturbed by the decline in freedom of information in Jordan and, in particular, the government’s proposed changes to the press and broadcasting code. Politicians should not interfere in journalists’ work. Media independence is one of the foundations of freedom of information. We call on parliament to reject this repressive bill.”The new provisions are like a sword poised over the head of every journalist. They show that the authorities are determined to bring journalists and their news media to heel, so that dissident views get as little exposure as possible.” The bill would make the 1998 press and publications code much tougher, especially articles 38, 42, 48 and 49. Under the amended articles, the officials in charge of enforcing them would have more authority to restrict the freedom of expression of media that are deemed to have acted outside the law.Paragraphs 1 and 2 of article 42 envisage the creation of a new specialized court, based in Amman, that would just handle cases involving the press and publications and would probably pose a serious threat to freedom of information. The press offences it could try include crimes “against internal and external security.” The failure to define such crimes precisely opens the way to judicial abuses.Under article 48, which restricts the press and publications department’s criteria for issuing licences, media without a licence would have to suspend their activities. Broadcast media would have to stop broadcasting and newspaper issues would be seized. Media that contravened these provisions could also be fined up to 5,000 dinars (5,600 euros). These and other articles define a “journalist” in an unacceptable manner, restricting access to the profession and forcing journalists to join a union. Journalists should be free to decide whether or not they join a journalists’ association. They should also be free to choose which union they join. The bill also targets the Internet. Paragraphs 3, 4 and 5 of article 49, would hold news websites responsible for the comments posted underneath reports or other forms of content, and would require that comments be vetted before they are posted. The sites would also have to store all the comments in a database for at least six months. This article puts the bill clearly at odds with international standards of media freedom and freedom of information, including article 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which covers freedom of opinion and expression.Paragraph 7 of article 49 gives the head of the state broadcasting commission the power to censor and ban any news website based abroad that does not respect the laws applicable to Jordan’s media. Article 49 also gives him the power to prosecute local news websites that contravene this law. This draconian bill has emerged at a time of tension and media freedom violations that include the suspension of satellite broadcasting by the TV station JOSAT since 26 July, after the latest edition of its weekly political programme focussed on corruption in Jordan. The head of Sasco had clearly yielded to government pressure to get JOSAT suspended, he said. Reporters Without Borders tried to reach the head of Sasco to verify this claim, but he was on a trip and unreachable.Reporters Without Borders is also concerned about the proceedings that the state broadcasting commission has initiated against JOSAT, as a result of which Al-Haroub and her guests on the offending programme had to present themselves for questioning on 14 August. The station’s journalists demonstrated outside the commission on 28 July in protest against the suspension. The attorney-general has charged them with defaming the king, defaming a public institution, inciting and participating in a public order disturbance and violating article 22 of the press and broadcasting code, for which they risk a possible 15-year jail sentence. Such suspensions combined with the new bill’s provisions are bound to have a major impact on editorial policies and critical news coverage. The Jordanian media fear that the proposed new law will be routinely applied to media whose political and editorial views are at variance with the government’s.Hundreds of Jordanian activists and journalists staged demonstrations throughout the country on 24 August in protest against what they call a “return to the past” in media freedom. Woman traded clothes for property in best investment she ever made

To date, the facility has produced more than 4 billion gallons of LNG, with export ships reaching more than 20 countries across the globe. It is worth reminding that Dominion Energy sold a 25 percent non-controlling equity interest in Cove Point to Brookfield Super-Core Infrastructure Partners for just over $2 billion in late October.last_img read more

Steelers WR Wallace focused on efforts, not boos

first_imgWalking back to the huddle, beating himself up a little bit after failing to hold onto a Ben Roethlisberger heave that would have gotten the Steelers out of an early hole last week against San Diego, Wallace tried not to take it personally. That doesn’t mean he succeeded.“I think they’re out to get me a little bit,” Wallace said with a smile. Then again, the easygoing 26-year-old understands he has no one to blame but himself. Wallace took a calculated risk last summer when he decided to hold out during training camp. Coming off his first Pro Bowl and entering the prime of his career, Wallace didn’t want to leave the Steelers as much as he simply wanted to get paid a little more — OK, a lot more — to stay. When management balked, Wallace reported less than two weeks before the season started and pledged not to let his uncertain future mess with his head.It hasn’t exactly happened.Sure, Wallace is on pace to match the 72 receptions he put up a year ago and he needs two touchdowns over Pittsburgh’s final three games to set a new career-high.Yet it’s the slip-ups — such as a handful of costly drops and a pair of fumbles — that have outweighed the spectacular. Wallace is in the midst of perhaps the most productive season of his four-year career. It just doesn’t feel like it.While the former third-round pick has shown the ability to adapt to offensive coordinator Todd Haley’s short-passing game and he’s accepted the fact there are fewer deep shots to go around, he knows he’s done little to calm critics who viewed his holdout as a betrayal.“Anything I do is going to be magnified, good, bad, it doesn’t really matter,” he said. “I’ve just got to do what I need to do and I don’t give anybody a reason to say anything. Whatever happens I take full responsibility for it.”And to be honest, he’s OK with it.“I don’t want nobody to ever say it’s enough,” he said. “I always want somebody to have a knock on me. Always, because it’s always going to make me a better player and it’s always going to give me something to strive for.”Even if, at the moment, Wallace is content with striving to avoid the kind of mental miscues that have cost the Steelers (7-6) this season. They are, after all, tied with Cincinnati for the AFC’s last wild card spot heading into Sunday’s game in Dallas (7-6) and could be in a better place.Wallace has six drops this season, tied for 16th most in the NFL. The names higher on that list include Wes Welker, Calvin Johnson and Dez Bryant. The difference, of course, is that none of those guys skipped training camp, and Wallace knows it.“I made the bed,” he said. “I’ll lie in it.”No matter how uncomfortable it can get.Wallace raised eyebrows last week when he admitted to having his mind wander during games. Looking back, he admits he probably should have kept that to himself.“When you’re not getting the ball into the games sometime you might get a little frustrated and lose focus in the game, not on the game, but sometimes you get mentally not focused on the things you always need to be focused on,” he said.It certainly looked that way against the Chargers. Backed up deep in their own end in the second quarter, Roethlisberger tested his sprained right shoulder and flung it as far as he could. Wallace had a step on the defender and stretched to haul it in, only to have it bounce off his hands to the turf.Though Wallace rebounded to catch seven passes for 112 yards and two scores, it’s the one he couldn’t bring in that stuck with him afterward.“All I keep thinking about was the drop I had,” Wallace said. “But you can’t dwell on that.”Besides, there’s plenty of other things to think about, including the future. Wallace has tried to block out what will happen once the season ends, adding it would be “selfish” if he started wondering where he’ll be playing next year.Maybe, but with 2013 fast approaching, there’s a real chance Wallace could be playing his final games in Pittsburgh. The Steelers signed teammate Antonio Brown to a contract extension while Wallace was working out by himself in Florida. And the rapid development of Emmanuel Sanders combined with the money Wallace could earn on the open market makes the prospect of Wallace sticking around seem unlikely. If time is growing short, Wallace is trying to make it count. So is his quarterback.“He has all the confidence in himself and we have it in him,” Roethlisberger said. “We’re confident that he’s going to come out and be great. There’s never a second thought in my mind about it.”In Wallace’s either.“It’s not like I’m out here dropping every pass,” he said. “I made a lot of plays, too, as well. But I definitely would like to make every single play on the field.“I’ve just got to keep working at it and I think things will go my way.”NOTES: LB James Harrison (illness) did not practice on Wednesday … S Troy Polamalu was held out of practice but it was not injury related … LB LaMarr Woodley, who has missed the last two games with an ankle injury, was a full participant … Coach Mike Tomlin met with RB Rashard Mendenhall to talk about the one-game suspension Mendenhall received for conduct detrimental to the team. And the Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver knew it didn’t have as much to do with the pass that had just clanged off his hands as with the expectations — self-imposed or otherwise — he just can’t seem to meet. Red Bank GOP Ready To Take The Reins

first_imgBy John BurtonRED BANK– What Borough Councilmen-elect Michael Whelan and Mark Taylor lack in experience in their young political careers, they say they make up in energy and enthusiasm.Red Bank Councilman-elect Mike Whelan“We’re going to be like a sponge, absorbing everything,” said Taylor, about his and Whalen’s plans for learning the ropes as the two Republicans prepare to take their seats on the new borough council. The Republicans will have the majority for the first time in more than two decades.“We’re still in kind of a limbo,” Whelan pointed out. As members-elect they haven’t formally taken their place on the six-member council but are already being approached by residents asking about things and what to expect. “People are looking at us to make changes,” Taylor said. The two will be sworn in on Jan. 2 during the borough re-organization meeting which will be held at the municipal complex at noon.As for what to expect, “I think we want to continue the progress that has been made,” in the last couple of years, Taylor offered, referring to the work of their GOP predecessors Cindy Burnham and Linda Schwabenbauer. Burnham was elected two years ago, and Schwabenbauer was elected last year.“We’re not going to upset the applecart,” Taylor assured, “but we’d like to continue the progress.”Red Bank Councilman-elect Mark TaylorTaylor, 34, a lawyer, and Whelan, 25, who works in the insurance industry, are two political newcomers who won what turned out to be a protracted and close campaign that eventually was determined by a formal vote recount last month. Whelan’s victory was particularly narrow, winning by a mere three votes over nine-year-incumbent Democrat Michael DuPont. Their victory, with previous wins in the last two years by Burnham and Schwabenbauer, set the stage for the GOP to take the majority control of the council for the first time since 1989.Whelan said this amounted to a mandate from the electorate. “People want change,” he said. The changing of the political guard generally ensures there will be some changes in political appointments for the new year. And that could possibly mean a different attorney, engineering and auditing firms, among others, positions that traditionally serve at the pleasure of the mayor and council.Mayor Pasquale Menna, a Democrat, said last week he hasn’t been informed about the future appointments as of yet. Taylor, in response, said it was premature to discuss that and no final decisions have been determined at this time.“Yes, we’re the majority,” he noted, “but we’re not the only ones on the council.”But the two, presumably with the support of their fellow Republicans have issues they would like to tackle in the coming year. Taylor sees it as time for the governing body to once again address the longstanding, and sometimes thorny, issue of parking. “We have an opportunity to dive deep into this,” said Taylor.Certainly, one of the considerations could be further discussions about a parking garage. Taylor said that could be one remedy “if done smartly,” and something that should be raised. “If it doesn’t cost the taxpayers money.”For Whelan, “The one thing I’m really concerned with is the businesses.”Whelan maintained, “When I hear horror stories of mom and pops (businesses) waiting for months to get a variance,” so they can proceed in opening, he finds that troubling.Making the borough more business-friendly and improving the parking situation, “These issues dovetail into each other,” Taylor believed. And the goal is “to get people to Red Bank,” Whelan stressed.Getting people here as visitors—competing with the recently redeveloped Asbury Park as an attraction, especially for younger people—and getting them to move here, to live and to raise their families, should be a priority, they believe.Another area needing attention is the borough’s infrastructure. Taylor called it “ancient” and “actually dangerous,” given its age and condition. Up to this point Whelan describes remedies as, “It’s been a lot of Band-Aids.” Both men acknowledged this could mean spending considerable money but it has to be addressed.“These are not new ideas but we need to move them forward,” Taylor said.Whelan said he would love to serve as the borough council’s liaison to Red Bank RiverCenter, the commercial district’s business alliance.Taylor, who has been active with the Parks and Recreation Committee for a number of years, and would like to continue working with the department if possible. In closing, Whelan offered, “I think the people of Red Bank deserve a break,” and they hope to “dig deep” into the budget to help ease the tax burden.“The vision we have is something we’re going to work on,” he said.last_img read more

Local guidebook celebrates 15 years of mapping the Kootenays with new version

first_imgWhat started out as a living room enterprise by two brothers from Trail has grown into a cross-country venture that embraces Canada’s great outdoor spaces. The widely popular Backroad Mapbook series tackles BC`s Kootenay Rockies region with a comprehensive new 144-page guide. “Fishermen, families who enjoy camping, hikers and hunters, people who like canoeing or cruising backroads — we appeal to all of them,” said company co-founder Russell Mussio. This broad appeal is the reason the Kootenay Rockies BC Backroad Mapbook has been the local guidebook of choice for over 15 years and a national best seller. It combines reference information with highly detailed maps which feature up-to-date forest service and logging roads, extensive trail systems and a wide range of recreational features that are not found on other maps. The series was born out of the Mussio brothers` frustration with what was available for exploring BC`s backcountry. “We’d literally have a different map or guidebook for hiking, for canoeing and for fishing, along with a few outdated topo maps with us; it was almost comical,” said Russell.  “It felt like we had to carry around a box full of stuff in the bush with us.” Nearly 20 years later, the rudimentary maps have evolved, the printing press has been replaced and the small apartment has been upgraded to a working office and warehouse where Russell no longer needs to sleep. The in-depth reference and map information requires a team of local researchers and writers to ensure regional information is accurate and noteworthy. Also, relationships with fishing and outdoor clubs, park superintendents, hiking enthusiasts, Government Ministries, and of course, feedback directly from readers, contribute to maintaining the most up-to-date maps available. Partners like ATV BC, BC Parks, Golden Hikes, Camping & RV in BC, Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC, Trails BC and Recreation Sites and Trails BC were instrumental in providing insider details for readers. The universal appeal for taking off into the backcountry has seen the Backroad Mapbooks series expand to include GPS maps, digital editions and 28 books for BC, Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Ontario as well as the Maritimes, with over 1.5 million books in circulation.last_img

Sachin Tendulkar retorts, says his absence from Parliament is due to family emergency

Photo: PTI.Sachin Tendulkar on Friday said that his absence from Parliament has been discussed too much and he doesn’t mean to disrespect any institution.Sachin cleared the air and said that his absence in Parliament is due to a family emergency.”My absence in Parliament is discussed. There is an emergency in my family. My absence in Delhi was due to my brother’s surgery,” he said. Sachin Tendulkar’s elder brother Ajit undergoes bypass surgery Speaking at a sports function in Vigyan Bhawan not far away from Parliament, he said when he was back from England he wanted to be in Delhi. In a veiled reference to the raging discussion about him in Parliament and outside by media, he said ” They are discussing everything about you in the media but I think you should be focussed on your job and nothing else”.He was addressing the medal winners of the Commonwealth Games at a function organised by the Sports Ministry.”I feel happy about my presence in Delhi”, the batting legend said.”My father once told me that there will be a lot of arms that will try to pull you down but as long as you stay in the right direction you will see that at one point of time you have gone beyond them. They will join hands to praise you” he said in his address to the athletes.”Not always everyone will like you. There will be obstructions but the energy should always be focussed on doing the right things and not get distracted”, the batting icon said. Tendulkar, Rekha questioned over Rajya Sabha absence advertisement”As sportspersons, your performance will be analysed and criticised. But one thing that outsiders can’t judge is the satisfaction that you will get when you give your 100 per cent. If you give 100 per cent and still the opposition team wins, you should not feel bad about it”, Tendulkar said.”I think it is important to accept everything with humility. Stay humble and stay grounded. Try to achieve more for India and we will all be behind you”Tendulkar and Sports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal took turns to give away the awards at the felicitation function, organised by the Sports Authority of India.A large contingent of media personnel, who had gathered at the venue were surprised to see Tendulkar on the dais as invitation letter had not mentioned anything about his presence. The batting legend, dressed in a black-and-white check shirt and black trousers was seen exchanging greetings as he handed over the awards to the medal winners, which included stars such as boxer Vijender Singh, shooters Gagan Narang and Jitu Rai and shuttlers P. Rajeeve of CPI-M raised the issue of long-duration absence of celebrities as he wanted to know whether they have sought permission for it.Responding to this, Deputy Chairman P.J. Kurien said Rajeeve and some other members had raised the issue earlier but there was no violation of the rules.”As per Article 104 of the Constitution, if a member is absent from either House of Parliament for a period of 60 days then the seat is considered vacant. In case of Sachin Tendulkar, he has not attended the Parliament for 40 days whereas Rekha’s absence is less than this,” he observed.Kurien said Tendulkar was nominated to the Upper House in April 2012 and has attended the session for three days. “Last time he had come to the House on December 13, 2013,” he said.last_img read more
