The duo was earlier mentioned in the relay team bracket only for the 25-athlete strong list for the Doha event slated September 28 to October 6.However, in the 22-year-old hurdler’s case, participation in his forte event will be subject to a fitness test that will be taken ahead of the IAAF event.Dharun and Anas both have qualified for the World Championships on merit and they both can run in individual and relays as well. However for Dharun, fitness is still an issue and we will check that before giving him the go-ahead, AFI’s deputy coach Radhakrishnan Nair told Mail Today.Another AFI official revealed that a decision on Dharun’s participation will be taken on September 19.Both Dharun and Anas who are key members of the relay teams booked their spot in the Worlds individual events after breaching the qualifying standards set for the meet. While Dharun clocked a scintillating 48.80 seconds to set a national record in 400m hurdles at the Federation Cup Patiala in March, Anas also improved his national record with a timing of 45.21.Dharun’s explosive start to the season at the Federation Cup was jeopardised soon after as the athlete saw no action for five months due to recurring shin bone stress fracture.advertisementThe quarter-miler returned to action late last month but didn’t take part in any hurdle event till date. Also, his unimpressive timings (with a personal best of 47.34 seconds) since the return in 400m have reportedly put him out of contention of relay action at Worlds despite being in the squad.Dharun, meanwhile, has revealed that he has already step up his preparations as the runner has started practicing with the hurdles for the first time in six months since last two days.Saritaben opted out of WorldsAsian Games relay gold medallist Saritaben Gayakwad has opted out of the Worlds due to a mysterious leg injury that she aggravated over a period of two months. The 25-year-old athlete was the only female athlete that returned to India with the men’s relay team last month for the National Inter-State Championships last month, where she also clocked her season-best of 52.96 seconds and was expected to be an automatic pick. However, running at the Indian Grand Prix VI, the quarter-miler hopped off in the middle of the race and had to undergo MRI scan a day later. The pain in the leg was there for over two months and that’s why I came to India last month to check with the doctors. The pain was there in Lucknow too but it got worse in Patiala, said Sarita, while not revealing the nature of the injury.AFI deputy coach Radhakrishnan too confirmed the injury but refused to reveal the findings in MRI scan report or further details of the injury. Also Read | Archer Tarundeep Rai, hockey Olympian MP Ganesh among 9 others in fray for Padma awardsAlso Read | Mary Kom, Sai Praneeth, Yashaswini Deswal added to TOPSFor sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to indiatoday.in/sports.
